Does Muscle Weigh More Than Fat

One of the most frequently asked questions  in the fitness world is “Does muscle weigh more than fat?”. The answer is NO! Five pounds is five pounds! The difference between the two is that muscle takes up significantly less space, in fact muscle is 15% denser than fat!

Let’s use two twins as an example. Both twins weigh 160 pounds, one does strength training and the other doesn’t work out. The twin who does strength training will look lean and toned because her mass is mainly dense muscle. Her twin on the other hand will appear much larger because her mass is mainly fat which is not dense at all.

A lot of women are hesitant about working out because they fear becoming bulky if they lift weights or strength train. Don’t worry! Women actually do not produce enough testosterone to develop large bulky looking muscles. Strength training will build muscle and help you look leaner. Plus it will help you keep from gaining excess fat because muscle burns three times more calories than fat does!

So when you decide to start a new workout plan, it’s important to remember a few other things:

-You can’t spot target

-Focusing on one area of the body is not an effective fitness plan

-Working out on an empty stomach is not always a bad thing

-Fitness doesn’t always have to be painful

-Find what works for you
