If you’re in your 40s or 50s and waking up feeling like you got hit by a truck, you’re not alone. That stiff back, those cranky knees, the shoulder that “just started hurting” – these aren’t inevitable parts of aging. They’re signs that your body is asking for something it’s not getting: proper strength training and daily mobility.
At Northern Touch CrossFit in Scarborough, we see this all the time. People walk through our doors convinced they’re “too old” or “too broken” to start exercising again. But here’s what we’ve learned from helping hundreds of midlife adults reclaim their bodies: most of those midlife aches aren’t age – they’re weakness (or overtraining and not respecting the bodies “limits”, but that’s for another blog, xo).
1. Lower Back Pain That Won’t Quit
The Problem: You bend over to pick up laundry and your back seizes up. You sleep wrong and spend three days walking like a robot.
Why It’s Really Happening: Your core muscles have checked out. Years of sitting at desks, driving, and avoiding “heavy lifting” have left your deep stabilizing muscles weak and your spine unsupported.
How Strength Training Fixes It: Proper strength training teaches your core to actually support your spine during real-life movements. Deadlifts, squats, and carries train your body to lift, bend, and move the way it was designed to – safely and powerfully.
There’s Hope! Many of our Scarborough members come to us after years of desk jobs in Toronto’s financial district. Within 3-6 months of consistent strength training, chronic back pain typically becomes a thing of the past.

2. Knee Pain Going Up and Down Stairs
The Problem: Your knees ache when you climb stairs. Getting up from low chairs is a struggle. You avoid activities that require kneeling or squatting.
Why It’s Really Happening: The muscles around your knees – your glutes, quads, and hamstrings – have weakened from not strengthening them. Your knees are taking all the stress because the bigger muscles aren’t doing their job.
How Strength Training Fixes It: Strengthening your glutes and legs takes pressure off your knee joints. Squats, lunges, and step-ups rebuild the muscle support your knees desperately need. Many people find their knee pain disappears entirely once their legs get strong again.
3. Shoulder Stiffness and “Random” Pain
The Problem: You can’t reach overhead without discomfort. Sleeping on your side hurts. Your shoulder just “acts up” for no apparent reason.
Why It’s Really Happening: Poor posture from computer work and lack of overhead movement have left your shoulder muscles imbalanced and weak. Your rotator cuff muscles have essentially forgotten how to do their job.
How Strength Training Fixes It: Proper pressing and pulling movements restore balance to your shoulders. Overhead presses, rows, and targeted mobility work rebuild the stability and strength your shoulders need to move pain-free.

4. Hip Tightness That Affects Everything
The Problem: Getting out of your car is awkward. Your hips feel locked up after sitting. You can’t get comfortable lying down or standing up.
Why It’s Really Happening: Tight hip flexors from sitting at a desk 8+ hours a day, combined with weak glutes create a perfect storm of dysfunction. Your hips literally forget how to extend properly.
How Strength Training Fixes It: Hip hinges like deadlifts and Romanian deadlifts, combined with hip flexor stretches and glute strengthening, restore proper hip function. When your hips move well, everything else feels better.
5. General Fatigue and “Everything Hurts”
The Problem: You’re tired all the time. Simple tasks feel harder than they should. You ache in places you didn’t even know you had muscles.
Why It’s Really Happening: Muscle loss (sarcopenia) starts in your 30s and accelerates if you’re sedentary. Less muscle means your body has to work harder to do basic tasks, leading to fatigue and general achiness. Yes, there are also life stage reasons like peri-menopause, menopause and andropause, but the truth is, most people who are experiencing this are likely lacking in fixable areas such as; reducing sugar, focusing on eating foods that combat inflammation, they don’t stretch except for 2 mins after class, and they lack in overall protein consumption. ALL of these items play a huge role in how the body feels day to day.
How Strength Training Fixes It: Building lean muscle mass makes everything in life easier. When you’re stronger, daily tasks require less effort, leaving you with more energy for the things you actually want to do. And when you strength train regularly, you improve build your overall muscle mass, which leads to improved metabolism and blood sugar fluctuations.
Bottom line, there are a TON of tiny habits that make a huge impact, and exploring lifestyle change is what is going to separate you from living life your in retirement vs. living midlife with the joy and vitality it deserves.
