Change is mathematics, subtraction and addition

Change is mathematics

When we think of change, we usually think of adding something.

A better approach would be to think of “subtracting” then “adding”

Lets look at our daily routine

Does our current routine serve us?

Does it benefit our life?

Is there something we can improve?

Making a change to your routine can seem nerve racking and cause some anxiety; however, if we look long term, is your routine serving you?

For example, winding down for bed

We check the doors, wash up, grab our phone, head to bed and start doom scroll until we knock out.

Rinse and repeat every night.

It seems to work as that is how you prefer to fall asleep – after having a huge dump of dopamine from scrolling your favourite social media app.

How is that impacting your sleep quality?

Studies have shown that even though you fall asleep after consuming all that content and staring at a screen, your sleep quality suffers. Let’s say you get in 6, 7 maybe 8 hours of sleep.

What is quality of that sleep?

Likely poor.

We may think that we need to add something to improve our sleep. “What supplement can I take?”

When we think of change we think of addition only, a better approach would be to think of subtraction and addition.

Not what can I add only, what can I remove and add

The hardest thing would be to put your phone away at least 1 hour before bed and then start winding down without the constant blast of images, clips and staring at a screen.

That is where the subtraction then add comes in

“Subtract” the phone and “add” a book

Although you may still be consuming information, you are no longer staring at a screen and your mind is not rapidly switching causing a large dopamine dump.

Allow your mind to rest so you can drift off into sleep which will let your body rest and in turn will improve your sleep quality.

And who knows, you may wake up not as groggy anymore.

We don’t know what we don’t know until we pay attention

Take stock of your habits and routines.

What can you subtract?

What can you add?

Try it for 30 days and see measure the improvements.

You may surprise yourself
