How many times should you come to the gym?

When we first meet with clients who want to join our gym, one question we get asked frequently is “How many times should I come to the gym?”

There are a few things to consider

At our Northern Touch CrossFit we sit down during our free intro to understand your previous fitness history and what your are trying to achieve.

Once we have a good understanding, we then develop a plan to achieve what you are looking for.

What you are trying to achieve can range from

  • Getting stronger
  • Get more fit
  • Losing body fat
  • Gaining muscle
  • Want to break plateaus
  • Looking to up your fitness game
  • Etc. 

Your plan can involve Personal Training, Semi Private Training, Nutrition Coaching, going through our On-Ramp to join Group CrossFit Classes or a combination of them. 

Understanding your fitness history and what you are trying to achieve will determine the initial frequency of attending the gym. 

A general guideline would be as follows

You should come to the gym 2 days a week if you are new to fitness or have more than 1-2 years of inactivity. 

You should come to the gym 3 days a week if you have been doing some activity and there hasn’t been an extended gap without exercise. 

You should come to the gym 4 days a week if you have some experience with both strength and conditioning and have already been consistently working out for the last 1-2 years. 

You should come to the gym 5 days a week if you are looking to level up your gains and breeze past any plateaus taking into consideration your sleep and nutrition are on point. 

All of these guidelines will help you get stronger, improve your body composition and health markers. 

We like to gradually ease into things, focusing on consistency then layering additional workout days. This approach will ensure you are developing the habit of attending the gym, avoiding burn out and allowing the body to rest and recover.
