Hyrox Training: Can CrossFit Help You Prepare for a Hyrox Race?

If you’re a busy professional looking for your next fitness challenge, you’ve probably heard the buzz around both Hyrox training and CrossFit. Maybe you’re tired of the same old gym routine and want something that’ll actually get you excited to train again. Or maybe you’re looking at both options and wondering which path makes the most sense.

Here’s the question we hear all the time: “If I want to do a Hyrox race, should I start with CrossFit training? Or are they completely different things?”

The short answer? CrossFit and Hyrox are like fitness cousins – they share a lot of the same fitness DNA, but each has its own personality. Let’s break down what that means for you.

What the Heck Is Hyrox Training Anyway?

Think of Hyrox as the fitness race.

It’s not some crazy obstacle course where you’re crawling through mud. But it is a series of exercises that are done in specific sequence.

Every single Hyrox race is identical. Same format, same distances, same everything. No surprises, no guesswork. So you know exactly what you’re training for.

Here’s What A TYPICAL HYROX RACE CONSISTS OF

It’s actually a pretty straight forward format.

8 workout stations. 1km run between each one. That’s it!

The Stations and what they work on your body.

  1. 1000m SkiErg – Full-body cardio machine that’ll test your upper body endurance
  2. 50m Sled Push – Leg power and mental grit
  3. 50m Sled Pull – Posterior chain strength under fatigue
  4. Burpee Broad Jumps – Explosive power & cardiovascular endurance
  5. 1000m Row – More cardio, executed on a a differing machine
  6. 200m Farmers Carry – Grip strength and core stability
  7. 100m Sandbag Lunges – Unilateral leg strength and balance
  8. 100 Wall Balls – The grand finale that tests everything you have left!

Between each station, you run 1 kilometer. That’s 8 kilometers of running total, plus all those strength stations. Most people finish somewhere between 60-90 minutes, depending on their fitness level.

Why CrossFit Is Perfect for Hyrox Prep

Here’s where things get interesting. If you look at that list of Hyrox movements, you might think “wait, I’ve seen these before.” That’s because CrossFit gyms have been using these exact movements for years.

If you do decide to join a CrossFit gym to help you prepare, these four things will be why you’ll be prepared to rock that race!

You’ll know how to execute each Hyrox move

Every single movement in Hyrox shows up regularly in CrossFit workouts. Wall balls during a brutal workout? Standard Tuesday. Rowing when your legs are tired? Yep. Burpees when you think you can’t do one more? We bet you can!

While other people are figuring out ways to learn these new movements, CrossFit athletes are already moving efficiently and doing them weekly.

Your Body Will Know What “Uncomfortable” Feels Like.

CrossFit’s high-intensity, constantly varied approach perfectly mimics what Hyrox throws at you. You get used to your heart rate spiking, recovering partially, then spiking again. That’s exactly what happens when you transition from running to a strength station and back to running.

Most people panic when things get hard. CrossFit teaches you to stay calm in the chaos.

You’ll Be Mentally Tough.

Anyone who’s survived a CrossFit workout knows the mental game is half the battle. CrossFit teaches you to push through discomfort, to keep moving when your body wants to quit, and to find another gear when you think you’re empty. These mental skills transfer directly to race day.

Your Body Won’t Break Down.

Here’s what’s cool about CrossFit – you’re not just good at one thing. You’re not the runner who can’t lift anything or the lifter who gets winded walking up stairs. The constantly varied nature of CrossFit builds a more resilient body that can handle 90 minutes of mixed demands without falling apart.

Real Examples from Our Community

We’ve had several members at Northern Touch CrossFit tackle Hyrox events, and their experiences show exactly how CrossFit preparation pays off.

Many found that their CrossFit background gave them confidence in the strength stations while others struggled.

CrossFit doesn’t just prepare your body – it prepares your mind for the challenge of sustaining effort over a longer duration than typical gym workouts.

So… Should You Start with CrossFit?

Does CrossFit help you prepare for Hyrox? 100%.

You’ll learn the movement patterns. You’ll build the work capacity. You’ll develop the mental toughness to suffer with a smile (okay, maybe not a smile, but you’ll get through it).

But here’s the real talk – CrossFit also makes you a better overall athlete, whether you ever do Hyrox or not. You’ll be stronger, more conditioned, and more confident in your body’s abilities.

The amazing thing about starting with CrossFit? Even if you decide Hyrox isn’t for you, you’ll have built something pretty badass along the way.

If both CrossFit and Hyrox are calling your name, stop making excuses. The best time to start is now.
